Parramatta Road is Australia’s oldest and most confused major road. Following an ancient pathway created by the people of the Eora and Darug nations, the road runs 23 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD west to the satellite city of Parramatta. It is dominated by car sale yards, auto workshops and hundreds of thousands of harassed motorists. It is also home to many small, struggling businesses and abandoned shops and offices.

The road regularly inspires bright and shiny plans for revitalisation that go nowhere. Hence its confused sense of identity. Recently, medium- to high-rise apartment blocks have started going up in an attempt to repopulate and restore this lost highway.
