Parramatta Road is Australia’s oldest and most confused road. Running 23 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD west to the satellite city of Parramatta, it is dominated by car sale yards, auto workshops and thousands of harassed motorists. It is also home to many small, struggling businesses and abandoned shops and offices.
The road regularly inspires bright and shiny plans for revitalisation that go nowhere. Hence its state of confusion.
Recently, medium- to high-rise apartment blocks have started going up in an attempt to restore this lost highway.
These photographs are part of a project started in 2025.
